18 February 2017, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa, Viet Nam – Under the APEC 2017 overarching theme “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future”, a series of the first meetings of APEC 2017 SOM 1 took place.
Over 390 delegates from 21 APEC member economies as well as regional and international organizations participated in 8 APEC meetings today, namely the Human Resources Development Working Group (HRDWG), Emergency Preparedness Working Group (EPWG), Anti-Corruption and Transparency Working Group (ACTWG), Business Mobility Group (BMG), Intellectual Property Rights Experts Group (IPEG), Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation (PPSTI), Experts Group on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade (EGILAT) and Chemical Dialogue (CD). High-ranking representatives from various ministries and agencies of Viet Nam also took part in these meetings.
At those meetings, APEC delegates reviewed the progress of on-going APEC projects and discussed their work priorities in 2017. They also proposed a range of measures and initiatives to advance those priorities in such areas as training of young scientists; promoting technological transfer; application of technology to reduce disaster risks; facilitating the movement of entrepreneurs in the region; promoting legitimate trade in wood products; enhancing supply chain connectivity towards sustainable growth, etc...
APEC members also exchanged ideas and shared best practices on how best to develop human resources for intellectual property in developing economies; manage and commercialize intellectual property; enhance the role of society in anti-corruption, among others. A number of capacity building projects have also been proposed, including those on enhancing emergency preparedness, supporting businesses' innovation.
In the upcoming days, delegates will continue discussions to develop work plans for their respective fora in 2017, thus contributing to realize main priorities of cooperation in APEC 2017.
SOM 1 and related meetings will be held over 14 days until March 3rd, including 56 meetings of 38 APEC committees and working groups.
